31 magg 1973 anni - Gibson sentenced to life - courtroom fight

Descrizione:

A San Quentin Prison correction officer was slugged by a convict in MArin County Court Friday after a judge sentenced the inmate to life in prison for the slaying of a guard.

Prison guards and Sheriff's deputies rushed into the courtroom from an ante-chamber to subdue Larry Justice, 30, after he struck Officer Richard Anohambauit. Anchambault was not seriously injured, and Justice was subdued quickly.

Authorities said a codefendant, Earl Gibson, also 30, rose as if to join the fight but was grabbed by officers and taken from the courtroom of Judge Joseph G. Wilson. Gibson, too, was sentenced to life.

The courthouse was the scene of the slaying of a judge, two San Quentin convicts and a civilian in 1971 in an escape attempt. Black militant Angela Davis was charged for the incident but later acquitted by a jury.

Justice and Gibson were convicted in April of charges in the 1971 slaying of Correctional Officer Leo G. Davis who had been guarding an alleged convict informer in the prison’s hospital section.

There was a small crowd in the. courtroom when Justice made his attack on Anchambault. The spectators watched the incident from behind a bullet-proof screen Wilson ordered constructed for the trial.
