Southern Baptists recognized that sound Baptist churches needed formal theological training since the 1830s, yet it took the pioneer vision of James P. Boyce to overcome the denomination’s demands and establish a seminary. He contended that the lectures should be taught in English, build up a superior theological library, and require that faculty affirm an institution’s confession of faith. Though hindered by the Civil War, the seminary swiftly made a name for itself and has trailblazed the way for five more SBC seminaries nationwide to date. These institutions continue to successfully train men who are equipped to feed thousands of local congregations the deep truths of Scripture. SBTS’s establishment was an innovative and powerful achievement contributing to the flourishing of the SBC.
