The Cuban Missile Crisis was a direct and dangerous confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union when the two came closest to nuclear conflict. The event came to a close when Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove Russian missiles from Cuba in exchange for a promise from the United States to respect Cuba's territorial sovereignty.
