In 404 AD, Mesrop-Mashtots invented the Armenian alphabet that initially consisted of 36 letters but now has 39 letters. The alphabet is still in use today and unquestionably assisted the survival of the Armenians as a people.

According to Wikipedia, the first sentence written in Armenian was: Ճանաչել զիմաստութիւն եւ զխրատ, իմանալ զբանս հանճարոյ: (To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding.
