After the Shah had been put into power by the C.I.A. with operation Ajax, a revolution threw out the shah, as he had become a dictator. An Islamic fundamentalist named Ayatollah Khomeini came to power, who then made aggressive actions toward the U.S. This was not entirely unwarranted, as America had put the Iranian people into an unstable position under the authoritarian Shah. Once Khomeini controlled the government some Iranian students kidnapped diplomats from the U.S. Embassy, demanding both the Shah so they could punish him, and the blood money he was payed by the U.S. This was called the hostage crisis.
