Hernán Cortés and the Aztecs: Cortés was born in 1485 in Spain. In 1521 he conquered the Aztec empire and claimed Mexico for Spain.
When Cortés arrived in Mexico, the Aztecs had come to rule over 500 small states and 5-6 million people. Cortes and his men used brutal force to conquer Mexico, fighting Tlaxacan and Cholula warriors before turning their focus on the ultimate goal of the Aztec Empire.

Years later Cortes's power was revoked, although eventually, the king allowed him to go back to Mexico. He retired in Spain, then eventually died in 1547 of pleurisy.
