Хоть страна и перешла на новый григорианский календарь народ продолжил по привычке отмечать Новый год по старому стилю (14 января по новому стилю). Так в России появился Старый Новый год.

Although the country switched to the new Gregorian calendar, the people continued to celebrate the New Year according to the old style (January 14 on new style). So in Russia there was an Old New Year.
