John N. Mitchell, at the request of President Richard Nixon, sent a telegram to The New York Times requesting further publication. He made this request on the grounds that such disclosures would "Irreparable injury to the defense interests of the United States." They cited sections from the Espionage and Censorship Chaprtor of the Federal crimnal code.
