In 1961, the Berlin Wall was built right in the middle of Berlin, Germany and divided east and west Berlin. The wall was built to prevent trade between the east and west of Germany. If anyone tried to cross to either side, they would be killed. It didn't matter whether someone from the familt was on the other side of Berlin, if you were on one side of Berlin when the wall was being built, that is where they stayed.
