15 feb 264 anni a. C. - Roman wars with carthage

Descrizione:

Punic wars were a seris of three wars fought between rome and carthage. The initial stages of the war were centered on the Mamertine city of Messana (modern Messina), situated on the northeastern corner of Sicily, with only a 20-mile channel separating it from the Italian Peninsula. The Mamertines were an unruly group of mercenaries who plundered and looted throughout coastal Sicily, provoking the ire of Syracuse, the dominant city on the island. The Mamertines induced Carthage to protect them from Syracuse; then, during the Carthaginian occupation, they persuaded Rome to intervene on their behalf, igniting the war in 264. Some historians speculate that the Romans' decision to help the Mamertines was merely an excuse for the Roman Republic to expand Roman power.
