*Following the War of 1812, the Americans elected James Monroe.* The election of 1816 would mark the last time the Federalists ran a candidate, and for a small to the Democratic-Republicans were the only party of America. These "good feelings" were as a result of there being a heighten sense of nationalism, as well as there only being one party. This era is best known for the Monroe doctrine, which saw James Monroe declare that no European nation was to colonize any part of the western hemisphere. This era also saw the expansion of voting rights to more Americans.
