On June 6, 1934, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was organized by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The federal organization would now require each and every publicly-traded entity to submit periodic reports regarding their financial statements. These reports first had to be deemed accurate by outside professional accountants before they could be handed over to the SEC.
