18 ottob 1914 anni - Første slaget i Ypres
Descrizione:
British troops entered Ypres. They were unaware of the size of the German force advancing towards them. However, numbers did not make up for experience as the Germans used troops with 6 weeks training to attack professional British soldiers at Langemark (north of Ypres). Eyewitnesses claim to have seen the German troops with arms linked singing patriotic songs as they advanced towards the British. 1,500 Germans were killed and 600 taken prisoner. A German corporal called Adolf Hitler rescued a wounded comrade and won the highest honour a German soldier could win - the Iron Cross. Neither side were able to dominate the other, leading to a series of battles in and around the area.
