The Civil War was between the Northern states and the Southern states. There was tension between them since they did not agree if slavery should be prohibited in territories that have not become states yet. The Northern states were modernizing and did not really care if slavery was abloshied or not. However, the Southern states’ economy heavily relied on slave labor and wanted slavery to remain unprohibited. When Abraham lincoln won the election in 1860s, he pledged to keep slavery out of the new terrirorries, so a few Southern states sceeded and decided to form a new nation.

At the beginning of the War, the Confederacy, the states that left the Union, were winning. They had slaves who kept the economy going while they were fighting the War. The battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the War, and the Union started winning battles since then. The War lasted for four years (1861-1865) and slavery was abloshied after the War.

The Civil War demonstrates that American democracy at that time was far from being a true democratic nation since only white men could vote. After the War, however, former slaves were given the right to vote. Although the government became a little bit more like a democratic government, they did not become one yet since women did not only not have the right to vote, but could not own land either.
