5 apr 1764 anni - The Sugar Act of 1764

Descrizione:

This act was passed by George Grenville, the act had replaced the molasses act of 1733. The Sugar Act would tax 3 pence per gallon of french molasses, and they had placed more strict customs enforcement so they wouldn't take bribes. This had very little support from the colonists because many people made their money smuggling french molasses like John Handcock of Boston. Some merchants said that the sugar act was going to destroy the distilling business and they didn't like the idea that many people would lose their business. People who were caught smuggling while the act was enforced were tied in vice-admiralty courts that were run by british appointed judges.
