Gough Whitlam was one of Australia's most memorable Prime Ministers. He developed our country and laid out the building blocks for what we have today. He scrapped university fees, secured national landmarks, created a free healthcare system (the base foundation for Medicare), became the first Australian Prime Minister to visit China, ended the conscription of Australians, stopped Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War, and much more! One of his most significant changes was that he returned the traditional lands in the Northern Territory to the Aboriginal Gurindji people. This was the sweet reward for almost a decade of the Gurindji people's waiting and struggling for their traditional country. Gough Whitlam took a handful of dirt and poured it into Vincent Lingiari's hand. The picture of Gough Whitlam's pale hand resting atop of Vincent Lingiari's dark one, specks of dirt peeking through, became very famous. It was an anti-racism movement and, more importantly, the formal and official giving-back of the Gurindji people's land.
