24 giug 2010 anni - Australia's First Female Prime Minister
Descrizione:
On 24 June 2010, after Kevin Rudd lost the support of his party and resigned, Julia Gillard was elected unopposed as his replacement - the first female Prime Minister of Australia! The 2010 election which followed saw the first hung parliament since 1940. A hung parliament is when no political party has enough seats to produce an overall majority. Julia Gillard still plowed on, and she did many amazing things during her time as Prime Minister, such as her misogyny speech as she spoke out against Tony Abbott, accusing Tony Abbott of overt sexism. After she was elected, Julia Gillard faced sexism, misogyny, and even harassment regarding her gender, but she continued to fight for what was right - women's rights, and the two E's - education and equality. She would not let sexist comments and angry protests shut her down, and she carried on as Prime Minister until 2013. Julia Gillard was the first and currently the only woman to hold the positions of deputy prime minister, prime minister and leader of a major party in Australia.
