On 1st January 1901, all six colonies federated. These colonies were New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia, and Western Australia. Before federation, these six colonies used to have their own defence forces, railway systems, postage stamps, seperate money, different passports, and if you wanted to pass into one colony from another, you would have to pay a tariff. Whilst federation would have dissolved all of these divisions, things weren't so easy. The bigger and richer colonies thought that the other, smaller colonies would weigh them down with their problems, especially financially, and the poorer and smaller colonies felt that the bigger ones would have too much power over them. Many speeches and campaigns went off about federation, and while some colonies were against federation, most were for it. Sir Henry Parkes' Tenterfield Oration was one example of a speech which really helped spread the idea of federation. In the end, federation was a win! The colonies all celebrated together as they became the Commonwealth of Australia.
