12 feb 1851 anni - When Gold Was First Discovered In Australia
Descrizione:
On February 12, 1851, a prospector named Edward Hammond Hargraves and his young helper, Lister, were working along the Lewis Pond Creek near Bathurst in NSW. As Hargraves relentlessly searched for gold, implementing the gold-finding techniques he had learned after a stint in California. Edward Hargraves was panning when he suddenly caught sight of a golden glint. "There it is!" he suddenly cried. "I shall be a baronet, you [Lister] will be knighted, and my old horse will be stuffed and put in a glass case and sent to the British Museum!" Unfortunately for him, none of his predictions came true, but his discovery of the first gold in Australia spurred on Australia's gold rush, and many men rushed out to become diggers, sometimes bringing along their families. The gold rush led to the Eureka Stockade, which led to fairer rights. Chain reaction!
