1962 17 December, 1984On the 17th of December 1984 indigenous Australians were given the right to vote. From the first federal election in 1902 to 1965, when the last state changed its law, thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were subject to regulations which prohibited them from voting at federal and state elections. Many people were against the government It wasn’t until 1984 that Indigenous people were finally treated like other Australians part of the nation and required to enrol and vote at elections.
