5 magg 1676 anni - Bacon's Rebellion

Descrizione:

Bacon’s Rebellion
In the early years, indentured servants from Great Britain were used as the primary labor source on the Chesapeake tobacco plantations of Virginia and Maryland. In 1676, aspiring politician Nathaniel Bacon formed a small army of impoverished and indebted former indentured servants that marched to and burned Jamestown in protest of the local government’s refusal to offer protection against the Indians. Because of Bacon’s Rebellion, Chesapeake planters began to use enslaved Africans as their primary labor source because, unlike the indentured servants, these slaves would never be freed and therefore never cause the type of social upheaval created by Nathaniel Bacon and his supporters.
