1 gen 493 anni - Clovis and Clotilde's wedding
Descrizione:
Clovis heard of the beauty of Clotilde through his representative at her uncle's court and wanted her for himself. Through his ambassadors, most notably Aurelianus, he'd ask for her hand to her uncle Gundobad who did not dare refuse him. Clotilde was an extremely good match for Clovis because she was a descendant of the king Athanaric of the Balti Dynasty, bringing to him and his Franks greater prestige in the political world.
Clotilde, unlike most of the barbarian descent, is of the Christain Trinitarisme faith (what would later become Catholicisme), and she is a very pious woman.
According to legend, Aurelianus secretly met with Clotilde and gave her the seal of Clovis as a promise to her. Clotilde joyfully accepts as she wants to be free of her uncle's influence. Under pressure, Gundobad accepts the proposal in fear of Clovis's reaction if he denied it but he later, under the council of Aredius, orders her recapture. That is when Clotilde leaves her carriage to ride a horse to safety where she is met by her new husband.
They are latter married at Soissons and Clotilde makes it her mission to convert her husband to the christian faith.
