Gold was first found by Edward Hammond Hargraves at the goldfields at Ophir, near Bathurst, New South Wales, on the 12th of February 1851. This discovery became news worldwide and spread like wild fire. People from all over the world came to try out their luck in Australia's goldfields. Australia's population tripled in population which also meant business. This eventually led up to the Eureka Stockade and gold is still continued to be dug up in Australia till this day.
