On the 20th of January 1788, 11 ships called the First Fleet, arrived in Botany Bay. Captain Arthur Phillip carried convicts on his ships.

A convict is a person who is guilty for a criminal offence and sentenced by a court. They are also known as prisoners. They were taken to Australia to complete their sentence. The living conditions for the convicts were very bad. They had to do a lot of work and if they continued to do criminal acts, they were killed. Most of them died because of the living conditions. There was a disease at the time called scurvy. Scurvy is a disease that many people died from because they lacked in Vitamin C. The convicts were treated badly and they didn't have much luck. Some of the worst convicts were taken to Van Diemans Land- Tasmania to continue their sentence.

This changed Australia because the people who arrived in Australia, saw the Aboriginal Australians there before them and some of them were killed. This shows discrimination and cruelty. Also, this changed Australia because of the living conditions that people had to work through back in the olden days.
