On the 12th of June 1902, the Commonwealth granted all women (excluding Indigenous Australians) the right to vote and run for parliament.

Women in the past were expected to get married and have kids. Everything wives owned belonged to their husbands. Women were told they were not allowed to vote because they were too emotional and not smart enough to understand politics. In the late 1800s, women started to demand change. These women were named suffragettes. Suffragettes fought hard to change the government's mind. They debated and wrote several articles asking for a change.

The government of South Australia was the first state/territory to give women the vote and allow them to run for parliament. Gradually, other states and territories followed, easing the inequality between women and men.
