Gold was first discovered in Australia on the 12th of February 1851. Prospecter Edward Hargraves was the first in Australia to find payable gold near Orange, starting the Australian Gold Rush.

Hargraves had found flecks of gold in a river near Bathurst NSW. Even more gold was discovered in what would become the neighbouring colony of Victoria. News of the discovery of gold in Australia spread around the globe. Quickly, hundreds of thousands of immigrants travelled from overseas to Australia to test their luck on the goldfields.
