On the 26th of January 1788, 11 ships, also known as the first fleet, arrived in Australia. This date marks the start of the British penal colony which was mostly formed of prisoners from Britain. This voyage was lead by Captain Arthur Phillip.

Before 1787, the over-flowing amount of convicts were sent to British colonies in North-America. However, the prisoners were quickly driven out of America because of the Revolutionary War. In 1770, the British 'discovered Australia', putting Captain Arthur Phillip in charge of establishing a convict settlement in Australia.

January 26 is also commemorated as Australia Day. For Indigenous Australians, Australia Day represents invasion and dispossession of their land since 1788. January 26 also is referred to as "Survival Day," "Day of Mourning" and "Aboriginal Sovereignty Day." Many protests have been caused over this day, protesters saying that the day shouldn't be celebrated the way it is.
