3 dic 1854 anni - The Eureka Stockade

Descrizione:

The Eureka Stockade happened because the miners were fighting for their rights and liberties on the Goldfields. They were complaining about the Miner's License being too expensive. They wanted to get rid of it, to be gone! They wanted democracy. Not one person to be in-charge of them. The current leader they had abused his powers to only advance himself. In the end, the Miner's Right replaced the license. Any miner could mine until they had to pay 1 pound at the end of the year. They were given the right to vote and mine for metals.

Early on Sunday, 3rd of December 1854, the Eureka Stockade was held near Ballarat. The battle was short, but deadly and life changing. This was a battle between the miners and Governor Hotham's Colonial Forces Of Australia Soldiers. The miners built a defence wall with all their remaining materials to prove that they were ready to take on anything that Governor Hotham was going to throw at them. They may have been poor financially but definitely not in spirit and they wanted to show when united together, they could take on any challenge. Peter Lalor, was the leader of the miners. Governor Hotham had sent his army to attack the miners without them knowing. The battle only lasted about 20 minutes ending with 30 miners and 5 soldiers killed. During this horrendous battle for liberty, This ended with the Soldiers winning but in court and by law, the miners had won.
