When Australia was “found” it had been six colonies with, smaller defence forces, different railroads, different parliaments and taxes. If you lived in New South Wales and you wanted to go visit Queensland, then you had to pay a tariff to get across the border. They also had to pay to trade between the colonies. If it weren’t for Sir Henry Parks giving an empowering speech federation would never have been an idea. His Tenterfield orientation drew in some of the locals from Tenterfield and from then on, the idea was passed around. Soon enough the government heard about the idea and started to create some rules on how federation would work in Australia. These rules are called the constitution. After multiple referendums they sent it off to Britain and got it approved. On the 1st of January 1901 Australians cheered as their new prime minister Edmund Barton swore in a Prime minister. If it weren’t for federation Australia would still be six different colonies. Federation is one of the most important parts of Australia’s history.
