The split of the Holy Roman Empire into The Western Roman Empire and the Byzantine (Eastern) Empire eventually in 285 led a split in the church, called The Great Schism. The western half’s church became The Roman Catholic Church, and the eastern half became the Eastern Orthdox Church.
