1 sett 2016 anni - Colin Kaepernick first game taking a knee

Descrizione:

On September 1, 2016, Quarterback of the San Fransisco 49ers, Colin Kaepernick, kneeled during the National Anthem of the United States of America. Kaepernick joined a list of professional athletes in America that chose to protest during the National Anthem. Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf and Carlos Delgado refused to participate during patriotic American songs as well. Mahmoud for treatment of the Islamic faith in America, and Carlos Delgado for his opinions on U.S involvement in the Iraq War. Colin Kaepernick chose to kneel from 400 years of oppression against black people. However, according to a poll done by Yahoo Sports, As of August 2017, 30% of Americans support Colin Kaepernick’s protest. But, what the American people seem to truly not support is the way Kaepernick is protesting. Protesting the unjust treatment of black Americans is the essence of Colin’s message, yet people have misconstrued the message entirely. People believe he is against the military and hates America. Colin stated that until “that flag represents what it’s supposed to represent” he will not stop kneeling.

Despite hundreds of years of blatant systemic racism, black Americans find a way to survive and thrive in this country. However, there is still a “know your place” message in the ears of well known black celebrities. Whether they achieved their status by acting, athletics, or comedy, they are still black in America. Colin Kaepernick did not need to risk his job security by protesting, but he chose to. Protests have not and should not be comfortable for everyone, they are meant to push the envelope. In these cases, W.E.B Du Bois, Tommie Smith, Peter Norman, John Carlos, Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Colin Kaepernick did not need to take a stand, but they did. They took that stance for the Emmett Tills and the Trayvon Martins. Black lives do matter. Yes, that might startle a few people and make them angry. But when Emmett Till’s 14-year-old body washed up mutilated and deformed, black Americans' blood boiled in infuriation, yet they channeled that anger into a movement. Leaders such as W.E.B Du Bois spearheaded the NAACP in search of human rights. When the United States government said no, Tommie Smith, John Carlos, and Peter Norman, took a stand for equality. The pattern is glaring, yet people seem to never see it coming. For the time being Colin Kaepernick and BlackLivesMatter may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the need for people and groups like them are apparent.
