23 ottob 1947 anni - NAACP petitions to the UN to condemn the U.S of mistreatment to Black Americans

Descrizione:

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was established in February 1909 in New York City by an interracial group of activists, partially in response to the 1908 Springfield race riot in Illinois. The NAACP fought for inequality in America. Therefore when Jim Crow laws had still been in place, the NAACP did what they did best. They organized and held several protests across the United States. W.E.B Du Bois spearheaded this effort and worked long and hard for reform. He is quoted for once saying that “It is not Russia that threatens the United States so much as Mississippi, internal injustice done to one’s brothers is far more dangerous than the aggression of strangers from abroad”. On October 23, 1947, Du Bois wrote to the United Nations (U.N) asking for them to redress the United States’ violations against black citizens. These violations included lynching, segregation, and inequalities in education, housing, health care, and voting rights. Du Bois titled his petition to the U.N “An Appeal to the World”. The United Nations Commission on Human Rights rejected Du Bois’ petition on December 4, 1947.

Regardless of having no success with their petition, to this day the NAACP celebrates and commemorates the actions of W.E.B Du Bois and his peers. If not for their courage and bravery the NAACP would have never existed. Today the NAACP is known for playing a pivotal role in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The U.S. Supreme Court’s 1954 decision in Brown v. Board of Education that outlawed segregation in public schools is one of the organization’s key achievements to date. The famous March on Washington The NAACP is an illustration of how much of an impact people’s voices can have not only on other people but on policies.
