Tiananmen Square Massacre
With all of the changes occurring in China, some people wanted another change, democracy.
In the spring of 1986, thousands of pro-democracy protestors gathered in Tiananmen Square to protest.
Students performed hunger strikes and didn’t move when the government told them to leave.
In June 1989, tanks and armed soldiers moved to Tiananmen square, where they fired on the protestors. Hundreds of people were killed, and more were injured.
This socked the West, and they stopped giving China supplies, and tourists stopped visiting. In order to make some money, China gave up control of some buisnesses and had the new private owners find a way to earn money.
