After Kansas became a territory, there was fighting over whether slavery should be allowed toexpand into Kansas Territory. Proslavery men burned Lawrence and threw a printing press in the
Kansas River. Fighting continued in the territory, which led to Kansas’ nickname, “Bleeding
Kansas.”
