The Spanish received exclusive rights to the lands west of a line drawn 370 leagues west of the cape Verde Islands off the west coast of Africa. The Portuguese received rights to the lands east of the line. This was one of the many attempts to create an agreement between the Spanish and the Portuguese and there land they both said they discovered.
