The Know-Nothing Party, so nicknamed because of its roots as a secret organization, experienced a brief rise in the 1850's as an anti-immigration nationalist party. Weak from the start because of internal disagreement over its stance, its members mostly fragmented into the Republican and Constitutional Union parties after the Dred Scott Decision. It wielded sectionalism like a weapon during its brief popularity, pitting white Protestants against other groups in a fervent white-nationalist campaign.
