France struggled to regain control of their land in Indochina.

Ho Chi Minh seized the territory of Dien Bien Phu from the French, who left the region.

The US was worried about the communist instability in the area so they did not pull out of Vietnam for another 20 years.

There was a surge of nationalism from colonies in the area once Japan was defeated.

Although Eisenhower wanted to prevent a communist win, Congress was determined not to get involved unless they could do so as a larger coalition. Britain and NATO didn’t want to help a lost cause.

CONNECTION

During World War II, Poland was split in two by Germany and Russia. But by the end of the war, the Yalta Conference allowed for Poland to become one nation again.

This was the first time in a long time where there was homogeneity in Poland and were able to create their own government. There was a large surge of nationalism throughout the Polish people.
