An operation is conducted by an Overwatch team led by Jack Morrison to rescue a number of scientists that have been taken captive by Talon. Morrison leads the team on the ground, while Ana Amari serves as a sharpshooter, providing them cover.

They extract the scientists, but back in the city, they come under fire by a Talon sniper. Morrison leads the team to the dropship while Ana engages in a sniper duel. They successfully make it to the craft, but Ana refuses to break off and continues her duel with the sniper. She finds out after shooting the sniper's visor off that she is in fact Widowmaker, whom Ana recognizes as Amelie Lacroix, the supposedly kidnapped wife of the late Gerard Lacroix. Her brief moment of suprise is all the time Widowmaker needs to take her own shot, shooting Ana through the scope of her rifle and into her cybernetic eye. It's believed that the shot killed her.

Upon returning from the mission, Morrison commits every resource at his disposal to find her, but has no luck. Everyone tries to convince Morrison that he is being irrational, but Morrison knows deep down that Ana isn't dead. He can't forgive himself for leaving Ana behind.

He later learns that the sniper was Amelie Lacroix (now a Talon agent known as "Widowmaker"), but keeps this information to himself.
