9 marzo 1964 anni - NYT vs Sullivan
Descrizione:
A court case where the Montgomery County (in Alabama, not Maryland) police commissioner L.B. Sullivan sued the New York Times for its defamation and the jury ruled in favor of Sullivan. The significance behind this trial is that it ruled that the First Amendment protected newspapers, even those with false statements, as long as they don’t act with “actual malice”. The decision of the court case was made on this day.
