Many historians argue that while this is not necessarily the beginning of the Mayan empire simply because at this time, the Maya civilization is not flourishing. The Olmec civilization flourishes during the rise of the Maya and is deemed to be more important until it's downfall in 400 BC. The Maya do not really spread and gain territory until around 1000 BC when the Olmec are considered to be in decline by Historians.
