During the 1931 local elections, Catalonian separatists won a sweeping victory and proclaimed an independent Catalan Republic. Since the Catalan Statue restored a large number of autonomy for Catalonia, as regards domestic affairs. Decisions about taxation and education would now be made by the Generalidad, new regional government for Catalonia. They also led to Niceto Zamora and the conservatives resigning from the government. He was replaced by Maneul Azana and Zamora’s departure allowed for the implementation of more radical reforms in the other areas because Azana was the leader of the Radical Republicans. When the constitution was revised and was finally accepted, Zamora was elected president. He held his post until April of 1936.
