15 gen 1936 anni - The Popular Front & 1936 General Election

Descrizione:

This was a group of political parties formed in mid January 1936 in order to prevent the right from winning the national elections in the following month. The reason it was formed was because left realized that the only way that they would succeed is by working together. The coalition consisted of several left-wing parties such as the socialists, communists, Esquerra party, and the republican union. At this point, most left-leaning reforms had been abolished by the government, so the coalition advocated for the reinstatement of most of the policies that had been demolished. The Popular Front won a majority of seats in the Cortes (263 out of a possible 473) and formed a new government. The new government introduced all of the reforms they had promised, which angered the elites. This caused them to pull their funds from the government. All in all, these events are important because they contributed to increasing the political polarization of Spain, which led to the Civil War.
