1 ottob 1934 anni - Asturias Rising

Descrizione:

The Asturias was a key region of Spain that had been industrialized. There were mines in the region, but because of the effects of the Great Depression, mine owners had cut back wages, increased working hours, and fired many workers. The workers were reasonably angry, and because they belonged to trade unions (mostly the UGT), all the left-wing parties agreed to cooperate in order to revolt. The armed uprising began, and the workers quickly took over most of the region, rendering the Civil Guard there useless. However, the government quickly responded, and sent 20,000 troops as reinforcements. After two weeks of fighting, the government had bombed villages and killed over 2000 people. The rebels were defeated, but the army didn’t stop there. They tortured and killed more people with reason or trial. Mine owners took the rebels’ defeat as an opportunity to fire more trade union workers. All of these actions pushed the Spanish people to adopt more extreme political views.
