One of the most powerful enemies to the Republic was the military. Many members of the military were right wing officers meaning many of them had an issue with the left wing gaining control of the Republic. One of the first actions taken by the military was a military coup led by Jose Sanjurjo. This attempt failed and Sanjurjo was arrested and sentenced to death but was later sent into exile in 1934. While this attempt was unsuccessful it was significant because it increased the hostility between the Republic and the military leading to more aggression in the future and later more successful attacks made by the military.
