The king (Alfonso XIII) agreed to hold elections earlier in the year to see what kind of government the Spanish people desired. When the results came back in overwhelming support of a republic, Alfonso XIII thought it best to go into exile in order to make the transition of power as peaceful as possible. The people had become very dissatisfied with his leadership as king, and therefore, he thought that it was best to peacefully exit the country. From there, a republic was declared and a provisional government comprised of leftists, republicans, and conservatives was introduced. The government was made up of four parties, the socialist PSOE, the Republican Action Party, the Radical Republican Party, and the conservatives. The provisional government ruled from April until June, when elections were held. The republic was declared because Primo De Rivera had resigned, the king had fled the country, and there wasn’t a real government, so the people were left to take matters into their own hands.
