To break the spirit of Chinese resistance, the Japanese General Matsui Iwane ordered that the city of Nanking be destroyed, and that order was carried out. Much of the city burned and the Japanese troops launched their campaign of atrocities civilians. In what became know as the “Rape of Nanking,” the Japanese butchered around an estimation of 150,000 male war prisoners, massacred an additional 50,000 male civilians and raped at least 20,000 women and girls of all ages, many of these women and girls were killed or mutilated.
