The first edition of the Quindaro Chindowan is published March 13, 1857. The paper openly declared that the town supported bringing Kansas into the Union as a free state. Only 52 regular, and one special edition of the paper survive.

The Quindaro Chindowan newspaper began in 1857. John Morgan Walden, a bishop to the Methodist Episcopal Church and minister, was head editor of the newspaper. Clarina I.H. Nichols, a women's rights activist and prominent abolitionist was co-editor. Together, they concisely expressed their antislavery beliefs utilizing newspaper journalism. They encouraged their readers to be self-disciplined and inspired hope of Quindaro becoming a great city.
