Vietcong forces attacked a US military base at Pleiku in South Vietnam. This attack killed 8 Americans. Johnson ordered an escalation. He ordered the first American bombing of North Vietnam. Code named operation rolling thunder, bombing continued almost nonstop for 3 years.
