In 1845 President James K. Polk was elected with his campaign slogan ¨54/40 or fight!!¨ . Polk is responsible for the expansion of the United States from the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that became California, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and parts of Colorado and Wyoming. This is important because these large states will throw off the balance of slave and non-slave states in Congress and the House of Representatives thus, jeopardizing the already frail agreement of the Missouri Compromise.
