The Emancipation Proclamation wrote by President Lincoln declared slaves in states still in rebellion to be free as of January 1st, 1863. This is important to the Civil War because most slaves left their homes to go and fight for the North because if the North won then their families and friends would be saved. This gave the North the upper-hand because now they have more motivation to fight
